Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have departed from a Washington summit empty-handed after failing to obtain the requested long-range Tomahawk missiles from President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president remarked following the civil meeting that he and Trump had talked about long-range missiles, but decided not to make statements on that matter "because the United States does not want an escalation."

Trump's Stance on Weapons Transfer

Although the US president left open the possibility of providing the missiles to Ukraine, his tone during the White House meeting was guarded.

"Hopefully they won't need it, hopefully we can get the war over without thinking about Tomahawks," President Trump remarked, noting that the United States required the missile systems for its own defense.

The American leader said that sending the weapons would be "a significant escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

Global Diplomatic Moves

The Trump-Zelensky summit occurred just a day after President Trump held telephone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged to meet him in Budapest in the near future.

Following the meeting, the US president used his social media platform to call for Kyiv and Moscow to "stop where they are" and conclude the conflict.

Ukrainian Viewpoint and Proposals

President Zelensky proposed that his country could offer drones in exchange for the Tomahawks, a proposal that prompted smiles and nodding from the American president.

Zelensky also complimented his counterpart on his role in achieving a peace deal in the region, implying that the US leader could capitalize on that momentum to help end the conflict in Ukraine.

When asked about whether the prospect of Ukrainian forces having Tomahawks had influenced Putin to meet the US leader, Zelensky answered, "It's unclear," adding that the idea had caused Russia to be "concerned because it is a strong weapon."

When questioned if he was departing Washington with greater optimism that his nation would receive the missiles, he stated, "I am realistic."

The Ukrainian leader believes that using these missiles to target Moscow's energy infrastructure would significantly damage Russia's military funding capabilities.

"Justice and freedom will prevail, and all the terrorism and evil will disappear," said one Ukrainian store owner. "We just want to live, we refuse to surrender, we just want them to leave us alone."
