Three Lions Coach Reveals His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Currently, his attention is fixed supporting the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from athlete to trainer began through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.
Rapid Rise
His advancement stands out. Starting with his first major job, he developed a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career led him to top European clubs, and he held roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We want to conquer the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in that period. It’s to take it from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the strength, the honesty. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. However, in midfield on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”
Drive for Growth
His desire to get better is relentless. While training for his pro license, he was worried regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed most of his staff but not Barry.
The next manager with the club was Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
