The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club history in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
