The Mystery Within the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

Editor's Note: This article reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements this season, the significance of the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle to come.
