New York Launches Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report ICE Images After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a fresh reporting form urging residents to share visual evidence of ICE operations across the state. This move comes just a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering mass outcry.
US Citizens Held During Raid
A US congressman revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," the AG declared in a release.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity recently, I ask you to provide that evidence with us. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and investigating any wrongdoings."
Form Details
The form includes options to upload images and video footage of the operation, along with a area to specify location information. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that states that "authorities could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or government document."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which observers say featured over fifty government officers, happened in a famous district of the city where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily en masse ā often to sightseers.
Footage of the operation depict several covered and weaponized federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers pursued the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the city streets.
Official Reactions
At a news conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be arrested for no reason." He noted the citizens were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is simply a justification to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the troops to prevent conflict that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the ICE raid escalated ā each of the mayoral candidates criticized the operation, along with NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.
The city's community groups spoke out as well.
"Federal officers targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on street vendors working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Agency rules prohibits the arrest of American nationals and the organization has stated it will not take into custody citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has discovered that numerous citizens have been taken illegally by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US recently.
An October operation in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests opposing ICE are widespread including allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document filed by civil rights groups alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in detention centers.
