Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Victories After Recent Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since guard Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals deny the allegations.
But, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
