A Devastating Shift Only 12 Months Has Brought in America
One year ago, the landscape was utterly different. Prior to the American presidential vote, thoughtful citizens could admit America's significant faults – its injustices and inequality – but they still could see it as the US. A free society. A land where legal governance carried weight. A country guided by a dignified and ethical official, even with his advanced age and increasing frailty.
These days, this autumn, countless Americans barely recognize the land we live in. People believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and forced into vans, occasionally denied due process. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque ballroom. The president is targeting his adversaries or supposed enemies and demanding legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has practically rid itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, journalism organizations are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.
“America, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the edge into authoritarianism and extremism,” an American historian, stated this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I imagined possible, it transpired here.”
One awakes with fresh terrors. It is difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the speed at which it has happened.
However, we understand that Trump was properly voted in. Despite his profoundly alarming initial presidency and following the cautions associated with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – even after the president personally stated openly he planned to rule as a tyrant just on day one – sufficient voters selected him rather than Kamala Harris.
Frightening as the present situation are, it's more frightening to realize that we’re only several months under this leadership. How will another 36 months of this deterioration position us? And if that period becomes a more extended duration, since there is no one to limit this ruler from determining that additional tenure is necessary, possibly for national security reasons?
Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are congressional elections in 2026 that could bring a different governmental control, if Democrats retake the Senate or House of parliament. We have elected officials who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, for example Democratic congressmen currently launching an investigation into the attempted cash appropriation from the justice department.
And a leadership election in 2028 could begin our journey toward restoration exactly as last year’s election put us on this unfortunate course.
There exist countless citizens demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed recently in the No Kings rallies.
Robert Reich, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare during the fifties or during the Vietnam war protests or in the Nixon controversy.
During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance.
Reich says he recognizes the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding currently. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, bipartisan pushback regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal defiance by media to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.
“The dormant force consistently stays inactive before certain corruption turns extremely harmful, an specific act so disrespectful of the common good, certain violence so loud, that the giant is compelled other than to stir.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the crucial issues persist: is the US able to ever recover? Can it retrieve its position in the world and its commitment to legal principles?
Or should we recognize that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My pessimistic brain indicates that the second option is accurate; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, though, advises me that we must try, in whatever ways available.
For me, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve engaging with election efforts, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.
Under twelve months back, we existed in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we are uncertain. All we can do is to attempt to persevere.
What Offers Me Hope Now
